Minister of Climate Change, Environment and Energy Thoriq Ibrahim has revealed that the government aims to introduce renewable energy in land and sea transportation. He made the remarks during the inauguration of the Energy Policy and Strategy 2024 – 2029. This is initiative aims to enhance the energy sector of the Maldives and develop it sustainably.
Speaking at the inauguration, Minister Thoriq stated that the Energy Policy and Strategy aims to reduce the MAldives' dependancy on imported oil and produce energy with the available renwable resource, as per the pledge made by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu at the 2023 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28). As such, the minister stated that the policy launched prioritises the production of electricity utilising renewable energy.
Furthermore, Minister Thoriq highlighted that the transportation industry is the industry which utilises diesel the most. Therefore, the policy includes works pertaining to analyse how much renewable energy can be utilised in land and sea transportation. The minister also stated that e-vehicles will be brought to the Maldives, under the policy.
The Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy announced that introduced is based on five main areas of development. This includes the analysing ways to generate energy from solar power technology and hydro and wind energy, and develop them. Additionally, it aims to introduce new energy technologies to the Maldives and further develop human resources in the field. The policy also includes the introduction of new measures to be implemented to reduce energy wastage and increase awareness, all while strengthening the laws and regulations required to enhance the management of authorities within the field.
