Parliamentary Group (PG) leader of the main ruling party, People’s National Congress (PNC) Ibrahim Falaah has announced the party’s decision to hold the biggest inter party election of the Maldives. Falah made the statement during a press conference held by the party’s election committee.
Speaking at the press conference, Falah stated that the party will be electing members for its steering committees, presidents and vice presidents for the constituencies and presidents of other committees of PNC. He noted that the party would be holding the election for 2,095 different seats.
Falah noted that this is the biggest ever inter party election being held by a political party of the Maldives. He also added that the party aims to make PNC the biggest political party in the Maldives by increasing the number of party members to 75,000 by the end of November 2024.
Member of the PNC Election Committee and the Minister of Health Abdulla Khaleel disclosed that the constituencies for the election will be considered as the constituencies in the Maldivian Parliament. He noted there will be no election to elect the presidents of the constituencies where the PNC are current parliamentarians. He noted that the elections will be held to elect Presidents for the constituencies with independent parliamentarians or parliamentarians that belong to other political parties. Khaleel stated that elections will be held to elect Vice-Presidents for all of the constituencies.
Khaleel also noted that those whishing to run for the seat of Presidents of the constituencies must submit membership forms of 50 new members while those that wish to run for the seat of Vice Presidents much submit 25 new membership forms.
Additionally, Khaleel disclosed that members will be elected for the steering committees of all of the islands. As such, he noted that seven members will be elected to the committees of islands with less than 3,000 people and nine members will be elected in islands with more than 3,000 people.
The election is scheduled to be held on October 19. Submission for candidacy in the election is now open and the application window will close on 1800hrs, September 30. The party will be publishing the voters list and opening for complaints, on October 4, following which it will be publishing the final voters list on October 8. The official results of the election is to be announced on October 24.
