Waste Management Corporation Limited (WAMCO) has launched its Resort Collection Service in Noonu Atoll, starting with Noku Maldives.
Minister of Climate Change, Environment, and Energy Thoriq Ibrahim had said that the service was introduced because resorts were not properly managing waste disposal. He also highlighted that the issue stemmed from contractors failing to transport waste to the beach or transfer stations as required.
As a result, WAMCO has taken over waste collection from the resorts. The service initially began at three resorts in Raa Atoll and has now expanded with an agreement signed with Noku Maldives. Managing Director at WAMCO Shaheed Ibrahim also signed the agreement on behalf of the company.
WAMCO collects waste from resorts in Noonu and Raa Atolls and transports it to the waste management centre in Vandhoo, Thaa Atoll. The company is making efforts to establish agreements with more resorts, offering one-year contracts and various service packages. The company also expects its resort waste collection services to become its largest revenue source and aims to cover 50% of Maldivian resorts by mid-next year.
