Minister of Sports Fitness and Recreation Abdulla Rafiu has disclosed that the state has spent USD 8.2 million on PSIP projects for sports. He made the remarks during a press conference held at the President’s Office to share the latest developments of the government’s sports manifesto.
In 2023, USD eight million was spent from the PSIP budget on sports projects. Therefore, the government’s spending of USD 8.2 million on sports projects so far this year is an increase of USD 260,416 compared to the spending of last year.
Additionally, the minister disclosed that a total of USD 7.7 million has been spend on sports related projects so far this year. These include projects to develop football and futsal fields as well as indoor and outdoor volleyball courts.
The minister further disclosed that a total of 264 projects are ongoing at various islands. He noted that a high priority is given to upgrade the existing zone stadiums.
The minister added that the renovation of the zone stadium in Hithadhoo and the renovation of the first phase of the zone stadium in Kulhudhuffushi has been completed successfully. A total of USD 78,125 was spent on these two projects.
Minister Raafiu also disclosed that the renovation of the zone stadium of Thinadhoo has also been conducted. As such, he noted that the project was worth USD 58,593.
Furthermore, the minister noted the continuation of the football tournaments that used to be held in Male’ City, as the biggest challenge the government is currently facing. He disclosed that USD 260,416 has been spent to fix the lights of the Galolhu Football Stadium.
Minister Raafiu also noted that 10 international sports tournaments have been held in the Maldives so far this year. He added that six more international tournaments are scheduled to be held in the country during this year.
The minister stated that work is ongoing in the National Assembly to amend the regulation and lay structure for national athletes, players and officials. He noted that the ministry had proposed to include the introduction of athletes’ insurance in the 2025 budget.
