Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef has praised President Dr. Muizzu's dedication to guiding the Maldives towards safety and prosperity, describing it as a testament to his deep love for the nation and its citizens. He made the remarks during a ceremony held to mark this year's National Day celebrations in Maaungoodhoo, Shaviyani Atoll.

Speaking at the meeting, Vice President Latheef urged Maldivians to remember the many victories achieved on the national day, marking the end of the nation's longest period of foreign military oppression. He highlighted the liberation of the Maldives from Portuguese rule, crediting National Day hero Muhammad Thakurufaanu al-Auzam for his significant contributions to the country’s development following the victory.

Additionally, Vice President Latheef emphasised that since taking office, President Dr. Muizzu has been a defender of freedom and sovereignty, both economically and socially. He acknowledged the President's efforts in addressing military presence and foreign migrant issues, along with his commitment to strengthening the economy. He also underscored the President's dedication to ensuring national security, maintaining sovereignty, and promoting the freedom and identity of the Maldivian people.

Furthermore, Vice President Latheef noted the ideological conflicts occurring globally, pointing out the subtle influences on children through various entertainment media. As such, he stressed the importance of teaching Maldivian children the stories of national heroes, instilling in them a sense of pride and patriotism, which he believes is key to building an independent Maldives.

National Day, observed annually on the first of Rabi’ al-Awwal, honours the heroic role of Muhammad Thakurufaanu in freeing the Maldives from Portuguese rule. The day stands as a powerful reminder of the resilience of the nation and the sacrifices made to secure its independence.
