First Lady Sajidha Mohamed has stated participating in Girl Guide activities provides young girls the opportunity to shape themselves into leaders. She made the remarks while speaking at the opening ceremony of the Asia Pacific Region Young Women in Governance Workshop, which was held at the Champa Central Hotel.
Speaking at the ceremony, First Lady Sajidha emphasised the diverse perspectives and driving positive change brought about by women in leadership positions. The first lady stated that Girl Guiding is not just about developing future leaders but also about empowering women and strengthening societies. Highlighting the efforts of Girls Guide Associations established worldwide, she noted the desired change could be brought about by providing mentorship and leadership training, encouraging women to participate in decision-making processes, promoting gender equality at every step of life, and creating supportive networks and communities.
Meanwhile, Minister of Social and Family Development Dr. Aishath Shiham recalled her days in Girl Guide, adding that it played a significant role in shaping her life. The minister stated that Guide activities also present a great opportunity to enhance societal ties. Stressing on the increasing number of cases pertaining to mental health issues and other medical problems, she urged all Guides to uphold their values and principles and exert maximum efforts to positively impact the society.
The Young Women in Governance Workshop was initiated in 2017, under the Motion 32 of the 36th International Conference held in India.
