The Ministry of Climate Change, Environment, and Energy has announced that the first shipment of materials for the initial phase of the "Magey Solar" project is scheduled to arrive in September.
The project aims to introduce renewable energy in islands currently powered by Fenaka Corporation Limited. President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has pledged to increase the renewable energy usage of the Maldives from 4% to 33%. To achieve this goal, he launched the "Magey Solar" initiative earlier this year, which focuses on generating energy directly from the households of residents and transitioning to renewable energy systems.
Speaking to PSM News, Deputy Minister of Climate Change, Environment, and Energy, Dr. Muaviyath Mohamed said that the project is progressing through various stages. He said that preparations have been completed for the first shipment of solar panels and equipment, which will be installed in 750 households during the first phase. He also said that the initial 3 MW of the project will be supported with solar panels and installation equipment by September.
Additionally, Deputy Minister Muaviyath said that the first shipment of 3 MW solar panels will be installed on islands served by Fenaka. The ministry is also preparing to install an additional 3 MW of solar capacity in the second phase of the project, for which financial assistance is currently being sought. The solar initiative will also extend to islands served by the State Electric Company Limited (STELCO).
The ministry said that the solar project will have a direct positive impact on reducing electricity costs for households. Each household is expected to receive between 3 kW and 5 kW of solar power, with the specific amount determined by the energy companies based on the electricity consumption of each household.
