The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has reported that 37 households in the capital, Male' City, have sustained damages exceeding USD 52,000 due to recent severe weather conditions.
The NDMA has assessed damages to 37 homes in Male' and 77 homes across 13 islands in the Maldives. Last week, heavy rains led to widespread flooding on several islands outside of Male', and strong winds caused roof collapses in some areas. In response, the NDMA initiated damage assessments both in the capital and across various islands to evaluate the impact of these adverse weather conditions.
Of the 41 households identified in Male' as affected by the rains, four declined assessments. The estimated total damage to buildings and household items across these households amounts to USD 53,000. The NDMA has also provided temporary shelter for 23 individuals from five households in Male', all of whom have since returned to normal living conditions.
In addition to the assessments in Male', 77 households across 13 islands have submitted assessment forms as of August 19. Significant damage to agricultural fields was reported on three islands. The NDMA is currently assessing these situations and is working to provide financial assistance to the affected individuals as swiftly as possible.
The Maldives Meteorological Service (MET Office) issued an orange alert for heavy rains and strong winds across the Maldives over the past week. The MET Office recorded 4,449.7 millimeters of rainfall nationwide from August 11 to 18, with Male' alone receiving 202.5 millimeters.
