The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has announced they have started to conduct a damage assessment of houses situated in Male' City, which were impacted by severe weather conditions. The authority revealed assessments are being made for the islands which were effected, in collaboration with their respective councils. They also said that 11 teams will be active to monitor and visit the households which were severely impacted by the heavy rainfall on August 13.
Speaking to PSM News, NDMA stated that following the assessment, financial assistance will be provided to the households which were effected by the weather, under the refill guideline determined by the government. They affirmed that maximum efforts will be exerted to complete the assessment promptly.
The torrential downpour on August 13 caused several islands of the Maldives, including the Grater Male' Region, to be flooded. While the Maldives experienced floods with 45mm of rainfall for two hours, the Maldives Meteorological Centre (MET Office) reported that 80mm of rainfall was experienced on August 13 alone. According to Meteorologist Hussain Waheed, the rainfall lasted for three and half consecutive hours.
Meteorologist Hussain Waheed stated that the MET Office anticipated more rainfall this year during the southwest monsoon, compared to other years. He revealed that the MET Office was well-prepared for the rainy season, noting that the season will last until December.
