Water and Sewerage Project of Kumundhoo completed, operations begin

The Water and Sewerage Project in Kumundhoo, Haa Dhaalu Atoll, has been completed and brought to operations. The project was undertaken by Maldives Water and Sewerage Company Private Limited (MWSC).

The project was contracted to MWSC and launched in 2021, aiming to address the issues raised by the residents of the island, pertaining to water and sewerage utility services. Despite the delay in the works of the project for various reasons, MWSC has successfully completed the project and has brought the systems to operations. The systems were commissioned by the Ministry of Construction and Infrastructure, Fenaka Corporation Limited and engineers of MWSC.

Under the project, a building was developed to establish a water plant and the main utility network was enhanced such that the utility pipes are connected to households. Additionally, a water storage tank along with a borehole drilling pumping station was established on the island as well. MWSC further installed a sea outfall and reject lines on the island, while ensuring the provision of the necessary facilities required to analyse the water.

The government has spent over USD 6.6 million, to ensure the provision of sanitary water and effective sewerage systems for the residents of Kumudhoo. This was an essential service the residents have been requesting for, as they previously were using water sources which were contaminated to some degree, according to Kumundhoo Island Council.
