Audit approved to investigate losses from Hulhumale' land allocations

The Parliamentary Public Accounts Committee has approved to conduct a special audit to investigate the financial losses incurred by the state due to the allocation of land plots in Hulhumale' under the Binveriya Housing Scheme launched by the previous administration.

The decision followed a motion by Parliamentarian Hamadh Abdulla during a committee meeting, in which he also proposed a special audit of the SME Development Finance Corporation (SDFC). His motion aimed to examine the financial losses resulting from land allocations made under the Binveriya Scheme and suggested that the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) should be compensated.

Additionally, Hamadh said that the audit was not intended to confiscate land plots from beneficiaries, but to address the political motivations behind such decisions and investigate the financial impact on companies. He also recommended that the SDFC audit cover the period from March 2019 to the last day of the previous government.

The Parliamentary Public Accounts Committee has directed the Auditor General's Office (AGO) to complete both audits within the next two months.
