Various parties express interest in planting 1.3 million trees so far: Gov't

Minister of Climate Change, Environment, and Energy Thoriq Ibrahim has announced strong public interest in the national programme to plant five million trees, with commitments already made to plant 1.3 million trees soon. He shared this update during a press conference about the work conducted by the environment ministry.

Speaking at the press conference, Minister Thoriq highlighted the positive response from various sectors towards the five million tree planting initiative. He noted that numerous resorts, schools, and private associations have expressed interest and pledged to plant a total of 1.3 million trees soon.

Additionally, Minister Thoriq mentioned that the policy for the five million trees initiative is being developed to expand the project's scope. The programme includes planting 90 species of endangered, fruit, and shade trees across the atolls and Male' City. The first phase of the programme was launched by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu on World Environment Day, resulting in 398,000 trees being planted on the first day.

Furthermore, Minister Thoriq assured that the health and growth of the trees are being closely monitored. He urged widespread participation to achieve the target of planting five million trees.

The national tree planting programme aims to restore endangered trees, enhance greenery, sustain the environment, and boost resilience to climate change.
