Maldives and Italy discuss areas for further cooperation

Newly appointed Ambassador of the Republic of Italy to the Maldives Damiano Francovigh has presented his Letters of Credence to President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.

Ambassador Francovigh was escorted to the President’s Office from Republic Square in a traditional “Haiykolhu” cultural procession, accompanied by the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) Drum and Trumpet Band. This ceremonial welcome highlighted the significance of the occasion and the warm reception extended to the Italian Ambassador.

Upon presenting his credentials, Ambassador Francovigh was welcomed by President Muizzu. The leaders discussed various areas for strengthening bilateral cooperation, with a particular focus on the tourism sector, climate change mitigation, marine research, and health cooperation. These discussions underscore the commitment of both nations to enhance their collaboration in critical areas of mutual interest.

Diplomatic relations between the Maldives and Italy were established in 1966, marking nearly six decades of friendship and cooperation. As the non-resident Ambassador to the Maldives, Ambassador Francovigh resides in Colombo, Sri Lanka, and his appointment reaffirms Italy’s dedication to fostering strong ties with the Maldives.
