Minister of Higher Education, Labour and Skills Development Dr. Maryam Mariya has announced the decision to resume the provision of A' Level higher education in the old building of Centre for Higher Secondary Education (CHSE). The decision was made to provide higher education opportunities to as many students as possible, following the increasing number of students who completed O Levels.
In a post shared on social media, Minister Dr. Mariya highlighted that majority of the local students seeking education from the schools in Male' City, adding that a total of 1,700 students who are currently in Grade 10, are studying in Male'. Noting the lack of a government school providing higher education in Male' can pose several challenges to students and parents, the minister revealed that arrangements have been made to resume the provision of higher education in the old building of the school to address the issue. She additionally disclosed that although the teaching resumes in the old building, no changes will be brought to the education provided in the CHSE building situated in Hulhumale'.
Furthermore, Minister Dr. Mariya stated that the commencement of higher education services in Male' will reduce the number of students travelling between the two cities, seeking higher education. It would also assist in implementing closure in education and reduce the government expenditure on higher education. Additionally, the minister revealed plans to develop a new government school to teach A level students, which will address the issue sustainably.
CHSE was established on July 3, 1979, under the name "Science Education Centre". The school is a well-renowned school, and the oldest school teaching A Level in the nation. The school building was transferred to Hulhumale' during 2023.
