Land reclamation of Hulhumale’ Phase 3 to be completed this year

The Housing Development Corporation (HDC) has stated that the land reclamation of Hulhumale’ Phase 3 will be completed this year. The project, which had been paused at the request of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) due to concerns over increased coral bleaching in the Maldives, is now back on track.
HDC initially inaugurated the reclamation work for Phase 3 on September 22, 2023. The project is divided into three areas, with substantial progress already made. Dredging operations have been completed for 10 hectares of land in Site A, and 16 hectares of the planned 29 hectares in Site B have been dredged.
The Assistant Project Manager of HDC Abdul Muizzu Hassan told reports that the first area to be completed after the resumption is Site B. He noted that reclamation work on Site C will commence once the reclamation of Site B is completed.

The Housing Development Corporation (HDC) has announced the resumption and progress of the land reclamation project for Hulhumale’ Phase 3, indicating that the project is set to be completed this year. Initially paused due to environmental concerns raised by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regarding coral bleaching, the project is now back on track.

The reclamation work for Phase 3 began on September 22, 2023, and is divided into three areas. As of now, dredging operations have successfully completed 10 hectares of land in Site A, and 16 hectares out of the planned 29 hectares in Site B have been dredged. According to Assistant Project Manager Abdul Muizzu Hassan, the focus is now on completing Site B first, with plans to commence reclamation on Site C once Site B is finished.

Capital Marine and Civil Construction Company Pvt Ltd is executing the project, and Muizzu disclosed that the company will bring in two additional dredgers by August this year to expedite the work. The entire initiative aims to reclaim a total of 63 hectares of land.

HDC intends to utilise the newly reclaimed land for industrial and marina purposes, alongside addressing housing shortages. Similar to Phase II, Phase III will include amenities such as parks, sports and recreational centers, and infrastructure like bridges and roads to enhance the quality of life for residents.
