Minister of Climate Change, Environment and Energy Thoriq Ibrahim has urged societal collaboration to achieve the goal of the government to plant five million trees in the nation. The remarks were made by the minister during the ceremony held to officiate the project of planting five million trees, commemorating World Environment Day.
Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Thoriq revealed that a study had been conducted to identify the endangered species of plants in the nation. He underscored the nationwide scope of the campaign, extending to resorts, industrial islands, and residential areas. Stressing the program's significance in preserving the environment for future generations, he urged local councils, businesses, and private entities to actively engage in the endeavour.
While 22 various types of trees were planted to launch the significant project, decisions have been made such that a total of 90 different types of trees will be planted under the project. Minister Thoriq unveiled plans to establish nurseries in three regions across the nation to facilitate convenient public access to trees. The minister further assured comprehensive dissemination of project details, including ongoing monitoring of tree growth.
In addition to this initiative, plans are underway to launch a special program to plant an additional five million trees over the next five years. Minister Thoriq reaffirmed the government's commitment to transitioning the nation to carbon neutrality and implementing effective waste management practices.
