Met Office issues orange alert for winds up to 60 mph

The Maldives Meteorological Service (Met Office) has issued an orange alert for parts of the Maldives, warning of winds reaching up to 60 mph.

The orange alert, in effect from Baa Atoll to Vaavu Atoll until noon on May 22, forecasts heavy rains and winds between 34 and 40 mph, with gusts up to 60 mph within clouds and very rough seas. In addition, a yellow alert has been issued for the area from Haa Alifu Atoll to Baa Atoll, predicting strong winds, rough seas, and heavy rains.

Due to the intensifying weather conditions, authorities are urging seafarers to remain vigilant. As such, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has also advised residents to take precautions to minimise damage from the heavy rains.
