Police Commissioner states increasing role of women in MPS is crucial

The High Commissioner of Maldives Police Service (MPS) Ali Shujau has expressed concern over the shortage of diligent female police officers serving MPS, stressing that competent female officers are required. The remarks were made by the commissioner during the ceremony held to inaugurate the second term of the Maldives Women in Policing Committee.

Speaking at the ceremony, High Commissioner Shujau reiterated the unwavering commitment of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu to ensure the provision of equal opportunities in the work environment regardless of the gender, affirming that efforts are underway to achieve this overarching goal. He unveiled the ongoing efforts to devise a strategic action plan aiming to achieve this target within the next five years.

Highlighting that the number of female police officers only contribute to 15% of the employees, the commissioner observed that many have the notion that female police officers can only undertake certain tasks. Hence, Shujau proclaimed that measures are taken to change such mindsets, revealing that tangible results can be observed.

Additionally, the commissioner disclosed that measures are being taken to ensure MPS becomes a secure and encouraging working environment for women. As such, Shujau stated that maximum efforts are being exerted aiming to resolve the challenges experienced by female officers.

Emphasising the significance of research to bring the necessary changes MPS, the commissioner affirmed the cooperation of the leadership of MPS in efforts to increase the role of women in the police force.
