Ziyau stresses Intellectual Property protection for National Development

The Managing Director of Business Center Corporation (BCC) Ibrahim Ziyau Mohamed has underscored the importance of protecting intellectual property, emphasising its crucial role in fostering substantial development and progress. These remarks were conveyed in a statement issued by BCC on the occasion of World Intellectual Property Day.

Moreover, Ziyau stressed that the present administration will accord special priority to safeguarding intellectual property within the creative economy, highlighting that the government is committed to nurturing a skilled economy and will implement proactive measures to protect the rights of the skilled workers.

Furthermore, Ziyau emphasised that significant efforts are required to protect the products of Artists and, as well as that of Littérateurs, ensuring sustainable income generating opportunities. He further noted the absence of legal protection for those individuals, stressing the importance of strengthening the law to protect their rights, including those representing vulnerable groups.

Additionally, BCC highlighted the abundance of talented intellectual property producers in the Maldives, underscoring the importance of establishing a Gross Domestic Product (GDP) threshold for such inventors. BCC further notes that this practice aligns with that of major developed countries worldwide.

Remarkably, this year's theme for World Intellectual Property Day, "Intellectual Property and the SDGs: Building Our Common Future with Innovation and Creativity," underscore the pivotal role of innovation and creativity in driving sustainable development goals. The forum's deliberations echoed this theme, highlighting the integral link between intellectual property, innovation, and progress towards a shared future.

Notably, World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO), in collaboration with the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade and the Business Center Corporation (BCC) has convened a special online forum commemorating World Intellectual Property Day. With 121 registered participants engaging in the three-hour webinar, the event fostered a dynamic dialogue on the complexities and solutions surrounding intellectual property rights.
