PNC Secures Super Majority in Parliament

The ruling coalition, People's National Congress (PNC) has secured the super majority in parliamentary elections.

The preliminary results released indicate that PNC has successfully achieved the majority of the representative positions, totalling 71. Notably, in the parliamentary elections, members were elected for a total of 93 constituencies.

Moreover, many of the currently serving parliamentarians have faced defeat in the elections. They include some proficient politicians such as the sitting Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Aslam, and as well as the Deputy Speaker of Parliament Ahmed Saleem. These seats are now held by PNC.

The opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has experienced a substantial defeat in the parliamentary elections. MDP has lost many of the seats it has been defending for years. As such, MDP has lost many constituencies they held as ruling party and as the opposition. Therefore, famous constituencies previously led by MDP, in Addu City and Male' City have been secured to PNC. Concurrently, all seats pertaining to Fuvahmulah City and Kulhudhuffushi constituencies were secured by PNC.

According to the preliminary results, MDP, which holds the majority of seats in the Parliament, has only won 12 seats. At the same time, ministers who served in MDP government did not secure any seats in the parliamentary election.

Additionally, the three parties currently working with the present administration, including Maldives Development Alliance (MDA), Maldives National Party (MNP) and Jumhooree Party have achieved some seats. Consequently, the three party leaders have successfully obtained the seats. MDA was able to secure 2 seats in the elections. Meanwhile, the Adhaalath Party and The Democrats have not attained any seats.

The preliminary results suggest that several independent candidates have secured seats during the parliamentary elections.
