Coast Guard advises caution in sea travel during Eid holidays

The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) Coast Guard has issued a cautionary advisory for travelers during the upcoming Eid al-Fitr holidays.

Annually, numerous individuals embark on journeys across different Maldivian islands for Eid celebrations. As such, the Coast Guard emphasises the importance of vigilance while traveling to various destinations during the holidays.

Speaking to PSM News, Commanding Officer of Coast Guard Ship Ghazee Lieutenant Colonel Mohamed Naeem highlighted the significance of checking weather conditions before embarking on voyages. He stressed the collaborative effort between the Maldives Police Service (MPS), MNDF, and the public in ensuring the safety of travelers, citing challenges in responding to accidents stemming from unplanned travel. He also underscored the necessity of verifying the vehicle's safety and communication equipment prior to departure.

Meanwhile, Captain Sergeant First Class Ibrahim Didi noted that many accidents occur due to vessels lacking the resources to mitigate such incidents. He also advocated adherence to regulations to minimise risks during travel.

The Coast Guard implement various initiatives to inspect the sea vessels each year. This year, such inspections will persist alongside the dissemination of safety guidelines and precautions by the Coast Guard.
