President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has disclosed that the government's decision to declare the last ten days of the Holy month of Ramadan as public holidays aims to facilitate individuals in performing prayers and acts of worship during the nights while reducing the burden of early morning work. These remarks were made during the "Raees ge Javaab" series, allowing direct public interaction with the President on various issues.
President Dr. Muizzu also announced special allowances for employees working in state-owned enterprises who are required to continue providing services during the last ten days of Ramadan. He emphasised the government's efforts to stabilise the prices of basic food items during Ramadan and revealed the distribution of essentials like flour, rice, and sugar to the public. Furthermore, the president announced discounts on utility bills, intending to alleviate the financial burdens associated with inflated bills during Ramadan. Overall, this year's Ramadan will bring significant relief to the people compared to previous years.
The president urged residents to utilise this relief by spending more time in religious activities. This marks the first time in the history of the Maldives, spanning 897 years since the country embraced Islam, that a government has designated the last ten days of Ramadan as holidays specifically for worship.
