"Maldivians determined to avoid becoming climate refugees"

Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Aslam has highlighted the nation's steadfast determination to avoid becoming climate refugees and has called for immediate action on climate change. He made these remarks during his address at the 148th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU).

Addressing the assembly, Aslam emphasised the increasing threats of extremism, terrorism, and drug trafficking to the Maldives, citing the recent attack on former President Mohamed Nasheed as alarming evidence of this trend. He outlined ongoing collaborative efforts between the Maldives and international partners to tackle these challenges.

In addition, Aslam raised the urgent issue of climate change, noting its disproportionate impact on the Maldives despite the country's minimal contribution to negative environmental practices. He stressed the need to protect citizens from adverse weather conditions, highlighting the nation's vulnerability as a landlocked island. Aslam underlined the population's strong attachment to their ancestral environment, expressing their reluctance to abandon it.

Furthermore, Aslam underscored the critical importance of gender equality in strengthening democratic principles and enhancing parliamentary effectiveness. He expressed concern over the low representation of women in the legislature and advocated for greater female involvement in political leadership roles.

Moreover, Aslam drew attention to the plight of Palestinian Muslims and condemned the inhumane actions of the Israeli military. He warned of the far-reaching implications of such aggression on global peace and stability, emphasizing the necessity of collective efforts to address pressing issues such as terrorism, climate change, and gender equality.

The 148th IPU Assembly, themed on advancing world peace and security through parliamentary diplomacy, is taking place in Geneva, Switzerland from March 23-27.
