HRCM concluded over 2,000 cases within five years

The annual report of the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) has revealed that the commission resolved 2,249 cases over the past five years.

As per the report, the number of cases investigated and completed by the HRCM surpasses the number of cases it decided to investigate. In 2023, although 393 cases were slated for investigation, 524 cases were resolved. Similarly, in 2022, 613 cases were completed against an initial plan to examine 543 cases. The report also detailed the number of cases resolved within the past five years, with 352 cases resolved in 2019, 308 cases in 2020, 452 cases in 2021, 613 cases in 2022, and 524 cases in 2023.

A total of 648 cases were submitted in 2023, comprising 528 cases from individuals, the government, and private companies, and 120 cases registered by the HRCM.

Additionally, of the 652 cases submitted to the HRCM over the years, the commission decided to investigate 393 cases, stating that the remaining 259 cases did not require examination. These pending 393 cases encompass various issues, including 126 cases related to the right to proper health of prisoners and detainees, 124 cases related to torture, 56 cases related to other rights of prisoners and detainees, 25 cases related to social, economic, and political rights, and 16 cases related to the rights of children and families.

The HRCM is an independent commission established primarily to protect individuals' rights in accordance with Islamic Shariah, the Maldives Constitution, and international and regional agreements binding the nation.
