WAMCO collects over 700 tonnes from Hulhumale' during Ramadan

The Waste Management Corporation Limited (WAMCO) has collected over 700 tonnes of waste from Hulhumale' Phase I and II so far during Ramadan.

Speaking to PSM News, Operations Manager at WAMCO Headquarters Ibrahim Haneef said that the waste removal commenced two days before Ramadan, totaling 272 tonnes of waste disposed of so far. He highlighted that while wet waste is typically gathered from designated collection centers in Hulhumale', the presence of unauthorised equipment in the streets near these centres poses a significant challenge. He also said that it leads to a concentration of waste in these areas instead of proper disposal channels, exacerbating the issue.

Additionally, Haneef said that approximately 400 tonnes of waste have been cleared from Hulhumale' since the start of Ramadan, with ongoing efforts to stabilise the waste management situation through enhanced operational strategies. He also acknowledged the collaborative efforts of various agencies in conducting cleanup activities, contributing to the removal of over 700 tonnes of waste from Hulhumale' Phase I and II.

Furthermore, Haneef cautioned against illegal waste disposal practices persisting during Ramadan despite the progress. He also emphasised the importance of responsible waste management behavior among the populace.
