Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) Abdulla Ziyad has criticised the previous government for initiating projects in the atolls without adequate funding, citing political motives. His remarks come in response to former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's assertion that the current government has halted all development endeavors commenced by the previous government.
Addressing Solih's claims, Ziyad accused the previous government of undertaking island projects solely for political advantage. He pointed out that the equipment suppliers extended credit for these ventures without a clear repayment plan, and fuel was obtained on credit as well, attributing this predicament to Solih's actions affecting MTCC.
Furthermore, Ziyad recently disclosed that the previous management of MTCC had left significant unpaid debts to various parties, amounting to billions of Maldivian Rufiyaa. He lamented the severe losses incurred by MTCC due to the previous management's decisions, highlighting instances where barges and dredgers were leased to execute projects at the company's expense, substantially reducing project revenue.
