In a bid to assist the public in managing waste during the holy month of Ramadan, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced a special initiative. For the next three days, Waste Management Corporation Limited (WAMCO) transfer stations will accept waste from the public free of charge.
Minister of Climate Change, Environment, and Energy, Thoriq Ibrahim, highlighted the challenge of increased waste during Ramadan, with households intensively cleaning their homes in preparation for the holy month. This has resulted in a surge in waste disposal, prompting the government to take measures to address the issue.
President Muizzu's decision aims to discourage the littering of streets and encourage responsible waste disposal. The waiver of transfer station fees is applicable to the public from 1800hrs on March 10 to March 13. However, government institutions, private businesses, and commercial waste disposers will continue to adhere to existing fee structures. This initiative aligns with the government's efforts to promote cleanliness and sustainable waste management practices during Ramadan.
