Afreen notes significance of empowering women via business opportunities

The spouse of the Vice President Aishath Afreen has emphasised the significance of empowering women in the business sector during the "Hiyala Forum 2024" organised by the Business Center Corporation (BCC) and SME Development Bank (SDFC) in commemoration of International Women’s Day.

At the event, Afreen highlighted the government's commitment to various development initiatives aimed at advancing women, aligning with this year's International Women’s Day theme, "Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress." She mentioned ongoing efforts to provide special loans and opportunities for women entrepreneurs in diverse fields. Afreen commended the collaborative efforts of BCC and SDFC, guided by the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade, in offering technical and financial support to empower women in the business sector.

Afreen expressed optimism the forum would identify the challenges faced by women in today's world and explore potential resolutions at both government and private levels. She noted the persistent issue of a significantly low number of girls entering employment and business despite an increase in their enrollment in higher secondary and higher education.

Participants at the forum observed that cultural norms, societal factors, and the acceptance of certain practices hinder women's progress. They emphasised the need for an education system that supports women in their advancement.

In conclusion, the collaborative efforts of BCC and SDFC, as showcased in the forum, aimed to identify challenges to women's financial empowerment and proposed solutions. The discussions focused on how women could be supported in the most effective manner to overcome these challenges.
