President plans to ease island acquisition for councils

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced that the Administration's objective to facilitate local Councils in acquiring islands for economic benefits, whether within or outside their jurisdiction, is underway. The declaration was made during his address at a gathering with the residents of Dhiggaru, Meemu Atoll.

Speaking at the gathering, President Dr. Muizzu emphasised the government's commitment to fostering self-sufficiency and prosperity among island communities. He highlighted the focus on allocating uninhabited islands for economic activities, extending the term of allotment to local councils from 10 to 25 years. He underscored the inclusivity of the process, enabling access to islands even in areas lacking uninhabited ones.

Additionally, President Dr. Muizzu expressed collaborative decision-making with councils and residents in island allocation, promoting diverse economic ventures such as tourism, agriculture, and handicrafts. He also assured support for island acquisition and business permits.

Furthermore, President Dr. Muizzu pledged swift development of basic amenities in Dhiggaru, including housing units, a harbour, and a hospital. He said that plans also include enhancing educational and banking services on the island.
