Gov't says 90% of prior fishing projects stopped

Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Resources Ahmed Shiyam has expressed concerns about the significant slowdown in the fishing sector, citing that 90% of projects initiated by the previous government have halted. He made the statement while speaking at a gathering with the residents of Hanimaadhoo during President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's visit to Haa Dhaalu Atoll.

Speaking at the gathering, Minister Shiyam highlighted challenges such as delays in disbursing funds to fishermen, inadequate ice plants, and limited storage capacity. He assured the residents that efforts are underway to address such issues, including the cancellation of projects not aligned with President Dr. Muizzu's vision and expediting ongoing initiatives.

Additionally, Minister Shiyam underscored President Dr. Muizzu's commitment to revitalising the fishing sector in Haa Dhaalu Atoll, envisioning it as a cornerstone of the nation's economy over the presidential term. He emphasised the government's goal of making the fisheries sector the most lucrative and employment-friendly industry in the Maldives.
