Gov't launches National Mental Health Helpline

The Ministry of Health has announced the launch of a national helpline dedicated to offering assistance to individuals grappling with mental health issues.

The National Mental Health Helpline is included in President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's Week 14 Roadmap and it was inaugurated by Minister of Sports, Fitness, and Recreation Abdulla Rafiu during a ceremony held at the health ministry. The designated national helpline number for individuals facing mental health issues is 1677.

Speaking the ceremony, Minister of Health Dr. Abdulla Khaleel emphasised that individuals residing in various regions across the country can avail themselves of services through the helpline. He underscored the objective of fostering a supportive relationship, aiming for the helpline to become a trusted ally for individuals in distress.

Additionally, Minister Khaleel expressed the aspiration for the helpline to instill confidence among individuals grappling with mental health issues, particularly highlighting the impact on the nation's productivity, especially among the youth. He urged both the youth and individuals affected by mental illness to use the helpline's services.

Meanwhile, Minister Abdullah Rafiu emphasised that the helpline represents a beacon of hope for those experiencing such challenges. He underscored the importance of treating mental illness with the same seriousness as physical ailments and expressed optimism that the helpline would streamline access to mental health treatment.

The health ministry outlined that the primary objective of the National Mental Health Helpline is to cater to individuals of all age groups facing mental health issues or difficulties. Operating round-the-clock, the helpline will offer mental health first aid, problem-solving assistance, and pertinent information, along with referrals to appropriate services, all within the confines of established policy guidelines.
