Minister of Agriculture and Animal Welfare, Dr. Aishath Rameela, has encouraged farmers to seize government-provided opportunities. The minister conveyed this message in a meeting with the farmers as part of her visit to inaugurate the Vertical Farming Pilot Project in Hanimaadhoo, Haa Dhaalu Atoll.
In the meeting with farmers, the minister discussed challenges faced by them and shared insights on expanding agriculture in islands, introducing new farming methods, and utilising the existing agricultural center in Hanimaadhoo for necessary assistance. The minister encouraged farmers to participate in training programmes and information sessions, offering government support, including assistance in obtaining loans for those entering the agricultural business.
Farmers highlighted difficulties in acquiring plant fertilizers and medicines locally, citing high prices. They also mentioned challenges in obtaining mud and expressed the need for easier avenues to sell their produce. Farmers requested increased financial assistance and the introduction of modern agricultural methods. They sought government support for selling their produce at a profitable rate.
Notably, 30 plots in Hanimaadhoo have been allocated for agriculture. The Minister also engaged with the Hanimaadhoo Council to discuss strengthening the Agriculture Center and explored possibilities for expanding agriculture on the island. The council expressed a desire for assistance in implementing the greenery project.
