"Kalhuohfummi holds significant historical importance for the Maldives"

The Minister of Dhivehi Language, Culture, and Heritage, Adam Naseer Ibrahim, has affirmed the enduring historical significance of Kalhuohfummi for the people of the Maldives.

In an interview with PSM News addressing the ongoing repair works of Kalhuohfummi, Minister Adam Naseer mentioned that once the restoration is complete, moralistic stories related to Kalhuohfummi will be shared with the public.

Upon completion of the project, the Kalhuohfummi will find its place near the Kalhuvakaru Mosque, with a dedicated area constructed to house the vessel. The facility will feature a wheelchair-accessible platform, allowing visitors to view the inside of the Kalhuohfummi. Additionally, panels and screens inside the hall will provide information about the history of Kalhuohfummi and the sacrifice of Sultan Ali IV.

The replica of Kalhuohfummi has been transported to the city, and the carpentry work, undertaken by a team from the Road Development Corporation (RDC), is currently in progress. The ministry aims to preserve the cultural heritage embodied by Kalhuohfummi and make it accessible to the public once the restoration is completed.

Although the repairs were expected to be completed for February 11, the ministry said due to various reasons the work will not be completed by then

Kalhuohfummi was the sailing boat used by Mohamed Thakurufaanu, in his endeavor to free the Maldives from the Portuguese occupation in 1573. The replica was constructed and made its maiden voyage on the 50th Independence Day and has since been kept in Aarah.
