Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed has announced that the Waqf Fund is set to receive an annual allocation of USD2 million with the commencement of the largest Waqf project in the Maldives, the development of Dar Ul-Salaam in Hulhumale'.
Speaking during the first public forum of ministers, Minister Shaheem revealed that the Waqf project, valued at USD13 million, faced a delay in the groundbreaking ceremony due to a redesign. He emphasised that the project is projected to contribute USD2 million annually to the Waqf Fund, contributing to the development of Islamic affairs in the Maldives. He added that the action plan for the year includes six additional Waqf projects, reflecting the government's commitment to advancing Islamic affairs and infrastructure in the Maldives.
Additionally, Minister Shaheem addressed the pressing issue of the dilapidated state of mosques across the Maldives. He said that efforts have been initiated to repair and renovate the mosques, with an increase in expenditure for repairs. He also said that an allocation of approximately USD970,000 has been earmarked specifically for the renovation of mosques in preparation for the upcoming month of Ramadan.
Furthermore, Minister Shaheem highlighted the government's focus on the country's 700 mosques, stressing the importance of closely monitoring their condition. He said that payments have been disbursed to companies that had previously not received their dues, ensuring the initiation of mosque-related projects. He also emphasised the significance of endowment properties in covering mosque-related expenses.
