Gov't to explore therapeutic potential of poetry for mental health treatment

Minister of Dhivehi Language, Culture, and Heritage Adam Naseer Ibrahim has revealed that a study is underway to explore the potential therapeutic benefits of Maldivian poetry for psychological treatment. He made the remarks during a ceremony commemorating Poets' Day in Thinadhoo, Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll.

Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Naseer emphasised the significance of poetry in fostering nationalism. He highlighted its multifaceted role beyond entertainment, encompassing a range of emotions. He underscored research findings indicating poetry's potency as a therapeutic intervention for mental health issues, noting its widespread application in other countries

Additionally, Minister Naseer said that a study focusing on the healing potential of poetry for psychological conditions will be conducted, in an effort to promote poetry in the Maldives. He explained that poetry's ability to inspire courage, alleviate pain, and induce happiness forms the basis for exploring its therapeutic application. He also disclosed plans to evaluate the effectiveness of Maldivian poetry in this regard.

Furthermore, Minister Naseer announced that preperations are being made to renovate the Dhivehi Language Academy. He also mentioned President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's pledge to relocate the academy.

During the ceremony, this year's Poets' Day winner, Abdulla Afeef, unveiled his poetry collection. The event also featured the release of books by various poets, along with presentations highlighting the stories of poets.
