STELCO to use batteries to power five islands

State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) hast stated it will start providing electricity using batteries in at least five islands by the end of the year.

At the ceremony held to mark the 74th anniversary of STELCO, Managing Director Hussain Fahmy said that the company has made remarkable achievements in developing renewable energy to achieve the government's target of making the Maldives carbon neutral by 2030. He also said that STELCO will develop renewable energy in at least five islands in Kaafu Atoll, Alifu Alifu Atoll, Alifu Dhaalu Atoll, and Vaavu Atoll. He detailed that the company is preparing to start providing 12 hours of electricity using batteries before the end of the year, adding that the service will be expanded to more islands.

Additionally, Fahmy said that STELCO will install hybrid generators or generators that only use diesel under the Sixth Power Development Project to increase the company's capacity to keep pace with the demand for electricity in the Greater Male' Region. STELCO has stated it is continuously working to find environmentally friendly and sustainable methods to generate electricity by increasing the use of renewable energy in its services.
