Repatriating Maldivian war refugees is a priority: Gov't

Minister of Homeland Security and Technology Ali Ihusaan has affirmed the government's commitment to repatriate all Maldivian refugees that have ventured into war zones abroad.

The initiative to bring back Maldivians displaced by war-affected zones commenced on the President Dr. Muizzu's first day in office. Recently, 21 refugees including 14 children under 18, were successfully repatriated from the Syrian-Turkish border.

Speaking to PSM News, Minister Ihusaan attributed individuals going to war zones to misinformation and external influences, emphasising that the harsh realities faced by them, become apparent only after reaching such areas.

Additionally, Minister Ihusaan expressed concern for over 100 individuals still stranded in war zones. He underscored the government's primary goal to expedite their return and provide necessary assistance. He also said that the repatriation of 21 individuals occurred after President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's visit to Turkey, following extensive consultations with the Turkish government. He also said that the government is working to ensure the safe return of all Maldivian refugees, despite the obstacles.

Furthermore, Minister Ihusaan highlighted the robustness of the repatriation programmes conducted in the Maldives. He emphasised stringent monitoring of the thoughts and actions of those returning. He said that any misconduct will be thoroughly investigated and appropriate measures will be taken under the Prevention of Terrorism Act. In addition, he emphasised the government's commitment to prioritising the protection of individuals from dangerous ideologies, war-related influences, and similar threats.
