NRC opens to journalists for the first time

The National Reintegration Centre (NRC) has opened its doors to journalists, providing them with a tour of its operations for the first time.

During the tour, Director General of NRC Anwar Naeem briefed the reporters on the initiatives of the centre in delivering rehabilitation services to individuals returning to the Maldives from conflict zones. He outlined the process in which Maldivians that want to return from conflict zones are subjected to DNA tests for verification of nationality. He said that they are returned to the Maldives following confirmation of their citizenship, and admitted to the NRC for a 30-day evaluation, with the findings subsequently submitted to the Criminal Court.

Additionally, Anwar said that educational initiatives within the centre involve Himmafushi School teachers conducting classes to impart literacy skills to children and offering vocational training for both children and adults. He specified that children, upon reaching the appropriate educational level for their age, would transition to regular schooling at Himmafushi School. He also highlighted the successful reintegration of a family by the centre.

NRC consists of four blocks and has designated areas for women, boys under 18, men over 18, and families. With a capacity for 72 individuals and five families concurrently, the NRC has implemented 24hr monitoring and established therapy rooms for psychological and social support. The centre also provides accurate information on religion and features a playroom and library for children.
