Minister of Climate Change, Environment and Energy Thoriq Ibrahim has revealed plans to install specialised equipment to monitor the level of harmful gases in the air in the Greater Male' Region. He made the announcement during the launch ceremony of the Integrated Transport Master Plan for the Greater Male' Region.
During the ceremony, Minister Thoriq conveyed the decision of the government to install monitoring devices dedicated to identifying toxic gases in Male' City, Villimale', and Hulhumale'. Notably, he mentioned the successful installation of toxic gas detectors in specific areas of Hulhumale' as part of the ongoing project.
Additionally, Minister Thoriq said the installation of the detecting devices have begun, adding that the initiative would facilitate more effective measures in addressing the effects of climate change. He also stressed the importance of establishing a low-emission transport system and the necessity for a well-designed transport plan.
Furthermore, Minister Thoriq underscored the health risks faced by residents of densely populated areas such as Male' due to toxic emissions from vehicles. As such, he said that the government's goal is to enhance the safety of Male' and reduce health hazards associated with such pollutants.
The Integrated Transport Master Plan includes the introduction of the electric bus and electric bike scheme, aiming to decrease reliance on traditional fuels and minimise emissions. The plan also includes the conversion of vehicles to electric vehicles, strengthened regulations for vehicle control and traffic management, and the incorporation of e-buses and e-bikes into public transport. The aim of the plan is to develop a safer and more user-friendly transport system in a sustainable manner.
