Maldives seeks assistance of Islamic institutions under OIC

The Maldives has held discussions on receiving support from Islamic institutions affiliated with the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to implement the policies of the Ministry of Islamic Affairs. The discussions took place during a courtesy call paid by Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed to Secretary-General of the OIC Hissein Brahim Taha.

During the meeting, Minister Shaheem expressed gratitude towards OIC and acknowledged its service to the Islamic community. He also highlighted the significant efforts undertaken by the OIC in providing assistance to the Palestinian people amidst the conflict in Gaza.

Additionally, Minister Shaheem delved into the prospect of collaboration with Islamic institutions under the OIC to execute policies outlined by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's administration. The discussions also touched on the potential support from OIC-affiliated entities such as the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB), International Islamic Fiqh Academy, and Islamic Solidarity Fund. The collaboration aimed at the development of the Fatwa Council and the Maldives Zakat House.

Furthermore, Minister Shaheem engaged in talks regarding bilateral cooperation on issues related to Islamophobia and counter-terrorism. He also mentioned exploring opportunities for higher education for Maldivian scholars and youth in Islamic studies from OIC universities.

Secretary-General Taha expressed gratitude to Minister Shaheem for his valuable service during his tenure at the OIC. Minister Shaheem had served as an Advisor to the Secretary-General of the OIC from 2019-2021. He played a key role in the Voice of Wisdom Centre of OIC and contributed to the compilation of the Islamic Encyclopedia prepared by the organisation.
