Largest Waqf building to be built in Hulhumale'

Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed has revealed that the largest Waqf building in the Maldives, the Dar Al-Salaam, will be built in Hulhumale'.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony of City Waqf and Atoll Waqf, Minister Shaheem said this year will include numerous Waqf-related projects. He also said that Waqf has been an important aspect of Islamic states since the time of the caliphate. He added that this will give the states funds to spend on religious matters and development initiatives.

Additionally, Minister Shaheem said the state receives USD389,000 annually from the existing Waqf building, Dar Al-Eiman, which is mainly used for the renovation of mosques. As such, he said the government aims to begin the development of the largest Waqf building in the country in Hulhumale' in the next few days. He anticipates the funds received by the building would solve all issues related to the maintenance and construction of mosques.

Furthermore, Minister Shaheem said arrangements are being made to begin the project. He also said that the Cabinet has decided to develop another Waqf building in the Greater Male' Region, called Dar Al-Argam.

Moreover, Minister Shaheem revealed that the Islamic ministry has decided to commence numerous Waqf projects in different parts of the country. He said he intends to seek the assistance of Islamic banks and foreign nations to carry out these projects. He added the ministry plans to provide equity to implement projects in collaboration with Islamic banks.
