The Maldives Police Service (MPS) has announced measures to curb the circulation of drugs and alcohol and enhance traffic management in Male'.
The decision to implement measures was made during a meeting held on January 3, involving the Central Policing Command, Operations Support Command, and senior officers from the Drug Enforcement Department (DED), along with Commissioner of Police Ali Shujau.
The primary focus of the meeting was the prevention of drug and alcohol circulation. As such, joint patrols involving DED officers and the Marine Police will monitor the Hulhumale' lagoon 24 hours a day in order to prevent trafficking. The measure aims to strengthen oversight on goods being loaded and unloaded from vessels arriving and departing from the island.
Additionally, the meeting discussed traffic management in Male'. The measures include deploying more police officers on the streets to improve road and traffic management, ensuring public safety and security at schools, hospitals, public gathering areas, and locations prone to traffic congestion. The decisions formulated in the meeting are set to be implemented starting January 7.
