Gov't aid disbursed to 70 households damaged by floods

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has recently declared that compensation amounting to over USD 25,900 will be disbursed among 70 households affected by the heavy rainfall on December 31, 2023.

The downpour on December 31 led to severe flooding in various parts of Maldives, particularly affecting the city.

In response to the crisis, the NDMA initiated assessments for 154 houses to gauge the extent of the damage caused by the rains. As of now, evaluations have been completed for 87 sites, including 19 businesses. However, assessments for 27 households were declined, and 21 households were inaccessible for various reasons.

The NDMA's evaluation revealed that 34 residential buildings incurred damages, resulting in a financial loss of approximately USD 16,000. Moreover, the destruction of essential items in 65 households amounted to approximately USD 67,000.

Following the thorough assessments, the government has committed to providing assistance to 70 affected households, totaling USD 29,700.

In addition to financial aid, the NDMA has taken proactive measures by offering temporary shelter to 42 individuals from eight houses. Approximately USD 11,600 was allocated for the initial response and temporary housing solutions.
