Male' drainage system is expected to fail again: Nasheed

Former President Mohamed Nasheed has raised concerns about the inefficacy of the current stormwater drainage systems in Male' City, stating that they have failed and are likely to continue failing in the future.

In a post on X, Nasheed expressed his concerns about the floods triggered by heavy rains in Male' and other islands on December 31. He proposed the need for new designs of drainage systems to address the challenges faced in Male', in response to the flooding issue. He suggested using natural solutions by reintroducing Male's mangroves and bathing tanks as effective measures.

The Male' Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) has announced its collaboration with relevant government agencies to tackle the flooding issue in the capital city. Male' recorded 118.2mm of rainfall, while Hulhule' recorded a historic high of 179.7mm of rainfall, the most in the last 50 years. The heavy rains and resulting floods have also caused damage to homes in Male' and some other islands across the country.
