Minister of Climate Change, Environment, and Energy Thoriq Ibrahim has expressed commitment to enhancing weather monitoring and forecasting capabilities.
In a post on X, Minister Thoriq said Male' City and Hulhule' witnessed one of its highest recorded rainfalls, as per the data from the Maldives Meteorological Service. He said such extreme weather serves as a stark reminder of the changing climate.
Additionally, Minister Thoriq said the government is committed to enhancing weather monitoring and forecasting capabilities, integrating climate change into national planning, and advancing infrastructure development for improved preparedness.
The statistics released by the Met Office show that Hulhule' recorded the highest rainfall in 24hrs from December 31, 2023 to January 1, 2024, measuring 179.7mm. Male' City experienced the second highest rainfall, measuring 118.2mm, while Goidhoo in Baa Atoll experienced the third highest with 105.6mm of rainfall. Notably, Hulhule' recorded the highest rainfall in the last 50 years.
