5 islands reported damage from the rains so far: NDMA

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has disclosed that five islands have experienced floods and house damage due to heavy rain.

Hisaan Hassan, Chief Executive of NDMA, shared in a news conference that the authority has received reports of floods and various damages caused by heavy rains across the city and different parts of the country. Currently, five islands in the atolls have reported flooding, according to Hisaan.

Providing further details, he mentioned that heavy rainfall and flooding was reported from Fonadhoo and Gan in Laamu Atoll, Nilandhoo in Faafu Atoll, Guraidhoo and Huraa in Kaafu Atoll, along with Himmafushi, Kaafu Atoll, and Goidhoo in Baa Atoll, also reporting damages. Additionally, Male' city has suffered the most substantial damage, with 140 houses flooded and various other damages, Hisaan disclosed. Of these, 54 people from 11 households have found temporary shelter in guest houses. He acknowledged the challenges in securing accommodations during the holiday season but commended the prompt cooperation of guest house businesses.

Hisaan noted that the government would cover all expenses for three days of accommodation and meals for those in temporary shelters. He also stated that NDMA would collaborate with the councils to gather information on affected households, conduct damage assessments, and provide financial assistance following the prescribed procedure.
