Proper waste disposal enhances public health: Gov't

Minister of Climate Change, Environment and Energy Thoriq Ibrahim has highlighted the role of public cleanliness and proper waste disposal in enhancing overall health and protection from harmful diseases.

Minister Thoriq made the statement following his participation in the cleanup initiative implemented across residential areas in Hulhumale' Phase I and II, an initiative under the National Mosquito Control campaign aimed at eliminating mosquito breeding grounds and addressing the recently identified filariasis in the country.

Speaking to PSM News, Minister Thoriq stressed the importance of refraining from disposing waste on the streets. As such, he underscored that littering poses risks and inconveniences to all members of society.

Additionally, Minister Thoriq highlighted the significance of effective waste management in the context of the increasing threat of mosquito-borne diseases like filariasis, asserting its pivotal role in maintaining a safe environment for the public. He also urged individuals that dispose waste on the streets to refrain from such habits.

Morever, Senior Public Relations Officer at the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) Ali Mashaar Musthafa underscored the government's commitment to the mosquito eradication campaign, emphasising the participation of government ministries, companies, and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in the initiative. He said that over 800 individuals are currently taking part in the mosquito eradication campaign in Hulhumale', spanning 15 zones in Phase I and II. He also said that the campaign has been progressing successfully despite adverse weather conditions.
