Minister of Health Dr. Abdulla Khaleel has revealed that a project to build a 100-bed hospital in Villimale' will begin next year.
Speaking to PSM News, Minister Khaleel said that the construction of a new hospital in Villimale' aims to enhance residents' access to healthcare services and alleviate the strain on hospitals in Male' City. He highlighted that this tertiary-level hospital will specialise in treating crucial diseases and the design will adhere to an environmentally friendly concept. He added that the hospital will be built with the assistance of China and will be opened within three years after construction begins.
A senior official from the Chinese government recently visited the Villimale' Hospital, which is under the management of Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH). CEO of IGMH Ibrahim Abdul Razzaq Haleem highlighted the challenges in providing adequate services due to the space constraints at Villimale' Hospital. He also said the construction of the new hospital will begin after guaranteeing basic health services to the residents, adding that a sea ambulance will be deployed for emergencies.
Villimale' Hospital provides 24-hour services and has a five-bed emergency room and three inpatient rooms. The hospital provides a limited number of services and does not have an operation threatre. Specialist doctors from IGMH travel to Villimale' Hospital to treat patients in need of specialist treatment and those who need emergency treatment are transported to IGMH. These challenges are expected to be solved with the construction of the new hospital.
