MNU to begin course on management of strata communities

The Maldives National University (MNU) and Ministry of Housing, Land and Urban Development signs an agreement to commence short-term training programmes in Property Management and Strata Communities Management.

The agreement was signed by Vice Chancellor Dr. Aishath Shehenaz Adam and Minister of State for Housing, Land and Urban Development Ibrahim Nizam. Developing professionals in the field of strata communities management is an important aspect of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's education policy.

Strata refers to a legal concept in real estate that involves individual ownership of a particular unit within a larger property or building complex. It pertains to a system of shared ownership where individual units or apartments are owned privately, while common areas (such as corridors, elevators, or recreational facilities) are jointly owned and managed by all unit owners in the building.

Speaking at the ceremony, Ministry of Housing, Land and Urban Development Dr. Ali Haidar said that tall buildings have been built in the last 10 or 15 years, with separate apartments owned by different people. As such, he highlighted the importance of professionals who can manage the common areas which are jointly owned by all the apartment owners. He added that the new MNU course will teach students all the technical, legal, administrative and other aspects relevant to managing strata communities.

MNU highlighted the importance of training professionals for the management of strata communities in accordance with the Strata Act. The university stated that it will also provide higher education opportunities in this field in the future.
