Maldives has the capability to control filariasis: Gov't

Minister of Health Abdulla Khaleel has stated that the Maldives has the capability to effectively control filariasis. He made the statement while speaking at the launch of the Mukabba social media campaign, which aims to enhance public awareness regarding food safety.

Speaking at the launching ceremony, Minister Khaleel highlighted the expansion of food testing systems to ensure food safety in the Maldives. He urged the health ministry to collaborate closely to strengthen the Maldives Food and Drug Authority (MFDA) and prioritise a five-year plan to enhance disease testing capabilities.

Additionally, Minister Khaleel emphasised the commitment of the government to addressing public concerns regarding the health sector. He assured that the Maldives has established a control mechanism for filariasis, with available medications and testing resources. He also disclosed the government's efforts to procure additional medicines and testing kits using emergency funds.

Furthermore, Minister Khaleel stressed the importance of providing the public with essential resources for good health. He mentioned having sent a letter to the Parliament, urging the expedited approval of the food security bill to focus on preventive healthcare. He added that the bill has undergone discussions and consultations with experts.

The Mukabba campaign is a collaboration between the MFDA and the World Health Organisation (WHO) with support from the Codex Trust Fund and aims to provide easily accessible information to the public. The MFDA urged the public to participate in the campaign responsibly and ensure cooperation to maintain food safety.
